Repent in Haste, 5 x 7, US Currency on vintage book cover, 2011

Repent Pepper Spray Cop; REPENT!

This is a collage (US Currency on a vintage book cover) that I created to donate to:
Spread the Word" • An Art Auction Benefiting 826LA. I felt that is was about time that Pepper Spray Cop should brutalize protestors in an original artwork.

Spread the Word is a one-night auction at Mark Moore Gallery set up to benefit 826LA, a non-profit writing and tutoring center with locations around Los Angeles, CA.

Please attend, it looks like its shaping up to be an incredible evening. You can buy tickets here.

From the Facebook Event Page:
A one-night exhibition held on December 17th, 2011 at Mark Moore Gallery, "Spread the Word" will showcase works by over 80 contemporary artists starting below $100 - with special emphasis on local talent - to raise funds for 826LA!

Featuring a live set by 88.9FM KCRW's Jason Bentley, craft beer tasting provided by Brouwerji West, local food truck eats by Holy Aioli and unique artworks for sale from artists such as Gary Baseman, Jessicka Addams, Dave Eggers, GLEE's Dianna Agron, Ryan Travis Christian, Okay Mountain and more!

The press response for my show A Hero Never Fails has been stellar. Here are a few of the must reads:

A Hero Never Fails is on view through September 10th, 2011

Freight + Volume

New York, NY

My first solo show in New York,  A Hero Never Fails, opens at Freight + Volume on August 4th, 2011.

Hero, 10' x 7' x 10', Mixed media and custom electronics, 2011

The centerpiece of the exhibit, is a defeated caricature of the 60's cartoon character Underdog titled "Hero." The goofball "hero who never fails" has resigned to abject apathy. Strung out on the "super vitamin pills" that provide his super powers, he sits slumped forward, meditating on his iPhone.

The work is three parts culture, one part self portrait. In a political state dominated by an agenda of distract the public and rob what's left, with two endless wars draining the last of my great grand-children's hope for prosperity, why be anything but apathetic to injustice?

Hero is a metaphor for my own vocational and economic struggle, my country's role on the global stage, and whatever is left of my American dream. Has the time come for heroism? Or should we just give up, sit back, and have a good laugh?

The opening reception will be held
Thursday, August 4 · 6:00pm - 8:00pm.

Today, officers from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives in Los Angeles walked into Mark Moore Gallery and confiscated one of my recent pieces; "Improvised Shotgun: White."

art seized by the BATFE
The officers also requested the current location and bills of lading of recently shipped work of a similar nature. I assume they plan to seize these works as well. The receipt for the initial seizure is shown below.

BATFE seizes Improvised Shotgun:White, 11/18/10As of this posting, I have not received any official complaint, cease & desist, nor notice of any kind from the BATFE. Likewise, they've made no requests pending on other pieces in my growing body of RECESS work.

I assume that the actions of the BATFE are a misguided attempt to develop evidence against me for alleged crimes they believe I have committed.

As I have made clear on this blog, other internet sites, and through my demonstrated exhibition record and career - I am an conceptual artist. My highly public and often controversial works have at time created both challenging and meaningful public discourse. This is the nature of my purpose.

The seizure of my works is a seizure of my voice, and a terrible injustice. I believe the actions of the BATFE today are a violation of my first amendment rights, and an act of overt theft. I am saddened and deeply disgusted that in the midst of this terrible recession, Federal tax dollars are being spent to stifle my rights, seize my work, and question my patriotism.

Everything you can learn about me is here. It is in the combined effort of my labor and the illustration of my ideas. My works are my words, my passions, and my livelihood. Draw your own conclusions and pass this along if you refuse to believe in an America where questioning culture is a crime.

RECESS bunker feed

The RECESS occupation experiment begins on Saturday July 31, 2010.

In this initial experiment, I will occupy the bunker for one week. I will eat, drink, work, and survive with the resources and equipment I have cached; hunting and gathering when absolutely necessary. A live video feed will be displayed at Mark Moore Gallery through the duration of the experiment. When I leave the bunker (on raiding runs) I will document and stream the results via cell phone.

The experiment ends on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2010. Visit Mark Moore Gallery to experience the live show. Recordings will be made available on my website and youtube channels following the exhibit close on Aug. 16, 2010.

This only the beginning.
